The Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) was founded on the 26th of July 1984. It is a sports association made up of all the public limited sports companies and football clubs in the First and Second Division that participate in official professional competitions on a national scale.

The LFP forms part of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol but has legal autonomy in its organisation and functioning. It is responsible for the organisation of state football leagues, always in coordination with RFEF.

A total of 20 teams contest the league, including 17 sides from and three promoted from the Segunda División. This included the two top teams from the Segunda División, and the victorious team of the play-offs.
About La Liga Football
The Primera División de España was first held in 1928-29, when FC. Barcelona became the first team to be crowned Champion. Until then, Spanish football was organised around the Championship of Spain.
The first seasons were played between the first champions and runners-up of the Championship of Spain. In the 1934-35 season the number of teams was increased to 12.
The LFP was established in the 1984-85 season. Until then the Campeonato Nacional de Liga was organised and run by the RFEF.
Since then, the Liga de Fútbol Profesional has been responsible for organising and managing national competitions, and is made up of all the football clubs which compete in them.
